Traverse Area Community Sailing (TACS) Endowment Fund
The purpose of the Traverse Area Community Sailing Endowment Fund is to support the mission of TACS, with a focus on providing affordable, fun and safe sailing opportunities. Gifts to the Traverse Area Community Sailing Endowment Fund can be designated to the permanent, unspendable endowment, or to the spendable portion of the fund. TACS employs five instructors, a Camp Director and Racing Coach, all US Sailing certified. Students have a wide range of options for sailing based on their skill level from beginner to expert; from day-sailor to avid racer; from small boat to keel boat; from training for youngsters to training for adults. TACS' fleet includes 25 Optimist Prams, 20 Sunfish, eight Interlakes, eight JY15's, eight Lasers, five 420's, one Access 303 and six Safety Boats. Thirty students from local high schools form the Traverse Area Sailing Team, competing against other high school sailors around the Great Lakes Region. A new Accessible Sailing program was launched in 2009 to give sailing instruction opportunities to individuals with disabilities through the use of a specially designed sailboat along with accessible ramps and equipment. The Traverse City Parks and Recreation Commission encourages and has endorsed the use of Hull Park at the north end of Boardman Lake. This provides an ideal environment in which to learn to sail: a central location; warm water; docks; launch ramp; and, fenced storage area for boats.
